School Council

Your involvement in the school council gives you the opportunity to enhance the partnership between parents, students, teachers, principals and the school board. School councils work as a team to ensure the highest quality of education and promote student achievement in each school.

South Dorchester School Council 2020 - 2021

Kari Okrainec -  Chair

Son: Rhett – Grade 2

We (Bruce Okrainec) have lived in Belmont 8 years now. I grew up in a small town in Pittsburgh, Pa.  I love the small town feel.  I work in the insurance industry during the day.

I joined School Council last year so that I can be more connected with our school and to supportive in any way that I can. I wanted not only my child but all our children to see the importance of having us be a part of their education.

Last year I worked along the side of Mallory Hesselmans & Rachel Parking on fundraising and this year a whole new experience of Chair.

Rachel Parking - Co Chair/Fundraising

I live in Belmont with my family and my daughter, Julia, is in Grade 2 this year at SDPS. I have been part of the School Council since she was in JK, co-chairing our fundraising committee. This year, I am the School Council co-chair and still on the fundraising committee. I love being part of the school community and seeing how much our wonderful families support our staff and students!

Maggie Dunford - Treasurer

I'm Maggie and I live in Lyons with my husband, Craig, and our two daughters who both attend SDPS.  I decided to join the School Council in the fall of 2020 to become more involved with our awesome school and the staff, students, and community members that make it such a welcoming place.  Being an accountant, it made the most sense to join school council as Treasurer.  It's not only numbers that I love though - I also enjoy reading and spending time with my girls exploring the various trails in our area.  I look forward to working with other parents and community members to make positive contributions to our wonderful school!

Christine Stoakley – Secretary

I joined as Secretary with the Student Council last September for the 2019/2020 school year. My daughter, Lauryn, is now 10 years old and in Mrs. D’Allesandro’s Grade 5 class. I enjoy writing and wanted to find ways to be more involved with the school, so the Secretary role was perfect! This has been a challenging year, but I’ve been amazed by all the hard work of the teachers and staff, as well as how well our children have adapted to their new normal.

Amy Campbell - Hot Lunch Coordinator

Daughter Megan in Grade 5 and Ava left school last year for Grade 7.

I love being able to volunteer at the school to first get to say hello to kids in the day but also to allow programs like hot lunch to run smoothly.

Being part of student council allows you to know what’s happening at the school where the fundraising dollars are going and also having a say in how they are spent.

Mallory Hesselmans – “FUN”draising

Hi! My name is Mallory Hesselmans, mom of Alivia (9), Emilee (7) and Jakob (5). We been a part of the South Dorchester family since 2015. I joined council officially in 2016 and have enjoyed raising many funds for our children to benefit from while at school. I’ve also enjoyed meeting many other families while attending meetings and having input in many aspects (whether it be different fundraisers, teacher tool requests, motivational speakers, field trips, or turkey dinners) for our kids. I’m looking forward to attending meetings this year from the comfort of my home in my comfies!

Beth Charlton – Member

My name is Beth Charlton and I have two sons at South Dorchester who are in grade six and grade four. Along with my husband, we have called Belmont home for the past 9 years. I am a registered dietitian and am working in long term care.

Being part of the SDPS School Council has given me an opportunity to be part of my children’s school experience and while getting to get to know our school community better. Participating in various events in and around the school has been a lot of fun over the years. While I will miss being in the school this year, I know how grateful and excited my kids are to be back at SDPS. It's going to be a year like no other!

Julie Neufeld - Member

My husband and I have lived in Belmont for 4 years and love raising our two children here (2d grade and senior kindergarten). This is my second year on the SDPS school council; it’s a wonderful, engaged group to be a part of.  I enjoy discovering new and exciting ways we can enhance our children’s education and bring our school community closer together.
